By Jesse Muñoz/COC Sports Information Director
College of the Canyons student-athletes Allyson Melgar (softball) and Colin Yeaman (baseball) have been named the COC Athletic Department's Women's & Men's Student-Athletes of the Week for the period running Feb. 20-25. Melgar and Yeaman are the eighth set of honorees for 2023.
Allyson Melgar / Softball
Melgar earned her second AOTW designation for the 2023 season after a standout performance that ended with her first career no-hitter in an 11-0 conference victory vs. L.A. Valley College last Tuesday.
The sophomore hurler retired the first 14 batters she faced to come within an out of a perfect game before the Monarchs finally got a baserunner aboard on an infield error by the Cougars. Unphased, Melgar promptly struck out the next batter to end the game and complete the no-hit bid, good for her fourth win of the season.
In all, she struck out five batters and also went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI in support of her own efforts.
For the season, Melgar is batting .320 with 11 RBIs at the plate while posting a 1.89 ERA across 29 and 2/3 innings.
Colin Yeaman / Baseball
Yeaman had a big day at the plate to help Canyons post a 13-7 home victory over Cerro Coso College on Wednesday.
The shortstop out of Saugus High School ended the game 2-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs. His two-run single in the third put the Cougars ahead 4-0, while his three-run shot in the seventh made it a 13-3 ballgame.
Through the first 11 games, Yeaman is batting .341 with two home runs, 10 RBIs, 11 runs, three stolen bases and a team-high six walks to go with a .634 slugging percentage. He has recorded multi-hit games in five contests this season.
