Cierra Coia & Tyrell Brown Named Jersey Mike’s Student-Athletes of the Week
By Jesse Muñoz/COC Sports Information Director
College of the Canyons student-athletes Cierra Coia (women's golf) and Tyrell Brown (football) have been named the Jersey Mike's COC Athletic Department's Women's & Men's Student-Athletes of the Week for the period running Oct. 28 to Nov. 2. Coia and Brown are the 10th set of honorees for the fall 2024 semester.
Cierra Coia/ Women's Golf
Coia ranked second on the team and 12th in the individual standings during the two-day Western State Conference (WSC) championships held Oct. 27-28 at Marshall Canyon Golf Course.
On day two, the Canyon High School graduate shaved 13 strokes off her opening-round score to finish at 89, making for a two-day total of 191 (102/89).
That total helped Canyons place third in the tourney's team standings and qualify for the upcoming 3C2A Southern California Championships being played Nov. 10-11 at the Los Serranos Country Club North Course.
Tyrell Brown / Football
Brown had an impactful presence during the No. 12 ranked Cougars' 27-21 home win over Moorpark College on Nov. 2.
The standout edge rusher finished the game with four total tackles, 1.5 sacks and a crucial interception that helped keep the Raiders at bay. In the fourth quarter, Moorpark drove the ball deep into Cougars' territory behind a pair of long completions. But on first down from the COC seven-yard line the Raiders' quarterback attempted a shovel pass that Brown stepped in front of, extinguishing all hopes of a Moorpark comeback bid.
Brown, who was also named the Chick-Fil-A of Valencia Player of the Game, leads the Cougars with 3.5 sacks and is tied for third on the team with 30 total tackles, including 17 solo stops.
