Baseball Falls 12-7 to College of the Sequoias

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – After falling behind 6-0 after four innings, College of the Canyons battled back in the ninth, before eventually falling to the College of the Sequoias 12-7, in COC's season home opener on Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 2-2, while Sequoias improved to 3-1.

Canyons starting pitcher Ryan Cruz allowed six runs in the top of the fourth inning, giving the Giants a lead that the Cougars could not come back from. Cruz (0-1) took the loss after allowing six runs on six hits, with two walks and three strikeouts in 3.2 innings.

Shortstop Jose Haros and second baseman JD Krauskopf went 2-of-4, while left field David Oppenheim was 2-of-5 with two RBIs and a pair of doubles.

Trailing by six, Canyons got four runs off four hits to cut into Sequoias' lead, 6-4, in the bottom of the sixth. The Giants responded in the top of the seventh with a little extra help from first baseman Roberto Ramos who committed back-to-back errors allowing Sequoias to cross the plate.

With a 9-4 Giants lead heading into the ninth, Sequoias struck again, adding three more insurance runs to take a 12-4 lead.

The Cougars answered in the bottom of the ninth when Taylor Ready hit a RBI double. Pinch hitter Johnny Ives reached first base on a Giant's error, allowing two more runners to score, but the following two batters couldn't get on base and the Cougars' run was cut short.

Canyons will travel to Rio Hondo for the first game of a home/away series on Thursday, Feb. 6. First pitch is a 2 p.m.
