Vigo Lifts Cougars Past Rio Hondo

WHITTIER, Calif. – College of the Canyons sophomore Nicholas Vigo helped the Cougars score three runs in the sixth and seventh inning to erase a one-run deficit en route to a 3-1 win over Rio Hondo on Thursday afternoon.

Trailing, 1-0, heading into the sixth inning, Canyons rallied for two runs on two hits off Rio Hondo starting pitcher Austin Georgen to take a 1-0 series lead in COC's first home/away series of the season.

After allowing the Roadrunners to score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third, shortstop Jose Haros was walked to start the inning and right fielder Austin Cole followed with a single. Vigo singled, his first of two hits, allowing Haros to score the tying run. Justin Krauskopf then grounded out to Rio Hondo's shortstop for a double play, but Cole had enough time to cross the plate for the go-ahead run.

With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning, Vigo struck again with a single RBI to score Corey Sims and give the Cougars a two-run lead.

Vigo went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the win, while David Oppenheim, Haros and Cole collected one hit apiece.

Joseph Cloney (1-1) was tagged with the win, allowing one run on four hits in seven innings with seven strikeouts and two walks. Timothy Han tossed the final two innings for his first save of the season.

The final game of the home/away series is set for Saturday, Feb. 8 at noon at Cougar Field.
