SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Sophomore hurler Ryan Cruz earned his second career complete-game shutout to help the Cougars take care of first-place LA Mission, 6-0, on Friday afternoon at Cougar Field. With the victory, COC improves to 17-13-1 overall and 13-5 in conference, while Mission drops to 20-10 and 15-3 in Western State Conference South play.
Cruz (5-5) picked up his fifth win of the season, allowing just seven hits in nine scoreless innings, striking out eight with two walks. Cruz also shutout San Bernardino Valley College in a 7-0 playoff win as a freshman last season.
The shutout marks the first of the season for the Cougars.
Canyons offense warmed up quickly to score four runs in the bottom of the first. Lead off hitter Nick Vigo, who had three diving defensive catches in the game, found a big hole in left center to start the inning off with a double. After Jose Haros moved Vigo on a sac bunt, David Oppenheim hit a RBI single to bring Vigo across the plate. Robert Ramos nearly turned in a home run, but it fell short of the wall and he had to settle for a double. With runners on second and third, Dylan Freyre followed up with a three-RBI homer over the left field fence to give the Cougars a 4-0 lead after one inning.
COC's Haros stretched the lead to 5-0 with a RBI double in the second inning, followed by Freyre scoring on a wild pitch in the third.
Mission stranded nine batters, including two in the first, the fifth and sixth innings, while turning in seven hits. COC had seven hits and left three on base.
Freyre went 2-of-4 with three RBIs, with two runs, and Vigo was 2-of-4 on the afternoon.
COC will travel to the Allan Hancock Tournament on Tuesday, April 15 for a 2 p.m. game against Merced College.
