Cougars Pounce on Allan Hancock 13-2 — Haros Hits for Cycle
The COC baseball team handily defeated Allan Hancock 13-2 last Thursday, as Cougar sophomore shortstop Jose Haros put together a big day at the plate to lead his team to victory.
Haros finished the game 5-for-5 while becoming just the second Cougar in the last 15 years to hit for the cycle. He also scored three runs and tallied three RBIs in leading Canyons to victory.
Haros got things started with a single in the first inning, and came back up in the second to club a two-run homer, extending COC's lead 5-2.
Not satisfied with just two hits, Haros went out to record a long triple — hit over the head of the Hancock center fielder — in the bottom of the fifth inning. He would go on to record an RBI double in the next inning to complete the cycle, before recording his fifth and final hit, a single, in the seventh inning.
In all, Canyons recorded 16 hits on the day, with DH Cole Mears, third baseman Dylan Freyre, left fielder Jassen Oliver and second baseman Colton Burns all prodcuing multi-hit days.
Freyre finsihed the day 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Mears also scored a pair of runs.
Elsewhere on the diamond, COC center fielder Tyler Ryan recorded two RBIs, and pinch hitter Isaac Yoshinaga recorded his first collegiate hit with a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh.
With so much offense, Canyons pitcher Jesse Posey was able to work comfortably, throwing six strong innings to improve to 2-0 on the season. The freshman hurler scattered five hits, walked two, and struck out five while allowing just a single run.
Posey was followed by the bullpen combination of Keegan Long, Zach Hanks and Cy Scott, which combined to allow just one run over the final three frames.
The Cougars enter the weekend with a 3-2 record and will next host San Diego Mesa at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
