College of the Canyons had its four-game win streak snapped, as the Cougars lost 4-3 at Orange Coast College in the opener of a two-game home and away series between the two schools.
Canyons is now 6-3 on the season, with each of the three loses coming in the form of one-run games.
On Thursday, COC starting pitcher JC Cloney (2-2) had a rocky first three innings before settling down in his final four frames. The sophomore lefty gave up a run in the first and three more in the fourth, while striking out five OCC batters in seven innings of work.
COC would support Cloney by postings runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Canyons had another chance in the eighth inning, with center fielder Tyler Ryan on third base with but could not get the tieing run across.
Right fielder Roy Verdejo was 3-for-4 with a home run, double and two RBIs to lead the Cougars at the plate. Third baseman Dylan Freyre registered the only other Canyons RBI.
COC will host Orange Coast College (9-5) at noon on Saturday, Feb. 21, at Cougar Field.
