COC Survives Comeback Bid To Get 6-5 Tourney Win Over East L.A.
COC pitchers Cy Scott and Chad Haslock combine to allow just two earned runs.
SANTA MARIA, Calif. — The College of the Canyons baseball team mounted two comebacks against East L.A. College to win 6-5 in its second game of the Allan Hancock Tournament on Wednesday afternoon.
COC pitchers allowed five runs total, but only two of those were earned runs because of defensive errors. COC reliever Chad Haslock managed to earn his second victory of the season in two and 2/3 innings of relief.
Canyons starting pitcher Cy Scott pitched six and 1/3 innings and allowed two hits, four walks, four runs – one unearned – and struck out five hitters in the no-decision.
This was Scott's first start since March 19, when he pitched four and 1/3 innings in a loss to Antelope Valley College.
The Cougars were down 3-1 entering the sixth inning and erased the East L.A. lead with RBI singles from Jose Haros and Tyler Ryan.
Haros' single brought home two runs, scoring Cole Mears and Jase Young who both singled to reach base earlier in the inning.
With one out, Tyler Ryan singled home Haros for the Cougars' third run of the frame giving COC a 4-3 lead.
Ryan's clutch hit was part of a 3-for-4 day which also added two more RBIs to his season total with 14.
The Cougars would need another comeback in the eighth inning after allowing the tying run in the seventh.
In the eighth, Jassen Oliver singled to lead off and advanced to second on a passed ball. Ryan then tripled to score Oliver from second base. Later, Ryan scored on a passed ball to give the Cougars a 6-4 lead.
East L.A. would score a run in their half of the eighth, but it wasn't enough and COC held on for the victory.
The victory gives Canyons a 15-12 overall record and evens its record to 1-1 in the three-day Hancock Tournament.
Head coach Chris Cota's club next plays Cerritos College in their third game of the Allan Hancock Tournament at noon on Thursday, April 2.
