The No. 2 College of the Canyons baseball team dropped its first game of the season on Thursday, falling 13-3 to defending California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Champion Orange Coast College.
Canyons (8-1) had defeated the No. 6 ranked Pirates 6-5 in 10 innings just nine days prior.
The Cougars struck first in the top of the second on an RBI single to left field by freshman Chad Bible.
OCC quickly recovered in the bottom of the fourth with six runs from five singles and two walks. The Pirates added one more in the bottom of the fifth and added six more in the bottom of the sixth.
The Cougars scored two in the top of the ninth but the rally effort came too late to mount a comeback.
COC freshman Chase Wheatcroft (2-1) took the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits in three and 2/3 innings of work.
Sophomore first baseman Jake Spurlin went 3-for-5 with an RBI and sophomore designated hitter Roy Verdejo went 2-for-5, representing the only two Cougars with multiple hits.
Sophomore Wyatt Hoppie was the only other Cougar with an RBI.
Canyons will travel to face Fullerton College (9-1) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27.
