Canyons Has Win Streak Snapped in 20-9 loss at No. 12 Bakersfield College
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The College of the Canyons baseball team had its 12-game winning streak snapped by Bakersfield College, losing 20-9 at Gerry Collins Field in a road loss that saw the Cougars give up the most runs they've allowed all season.
Canyons got off to a flying start, scoring six runs in the first inning and eventually building a 7-0 lead after the top of the second inning.
That lead did not last, however, as the Renegades scored three runs in their home half of the second, three more in the third, another run in the fourth, and capped things off with an eight-run barrage in the sixth inning to give them a 15-9 lead.
Bakersfield scored five more runs in the eighth to wrap up the day's scoring.
Despite the dismal result, several Cougars had good days at the plate including Colton Burns, Roy Verdejo and Anthony Lepre.
Lepre went 3-for-6 on the day raising his batting average to .392 on the season.
Burns collected two hits in three at-bats, scored two runs and drove in two runs. He has 22 RBI and is now batting .438 on the season.
Verdejo went 3-for-6, scored two runs and drove in two more runs. He is third on the team in runs batted in with 26.
Canyons will look to bounce back vs. Bakersfield, in the finale of a three-game series to be played at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at Cougar Field.
