No. 3 Canyons Can't Keep Lead in 10-9 Loss at Glendale
Canyons (24-7, 11-5) led 9-3 heading into the sixth inning before Glendale was able to rally.
The No. 3 regionally ranked College of the Canyons baseball team fell to host No. 4 Glendale College on Tuesday, letting a six run lead slip away late in the game to eventually fall 10-9 on a walk-off hit by the Vaqueros.
Canyons (24-7, 11-5) led 9-3 heading into the sixth inning before giving up seven runs over the course of the next four frames.
The loss was the third straight for COC this season, the first such streak of the season. The Cougars are now two games behind Glendale in the Western State Conference, South division standings.
The Cougar bats were hot early on. Freshman Chad Bible recorded an RBI single and Anthony Lepre clubbed a two-run home run to bring in Bible and give Canyons a 3-0 first inning lead.
Things continued well for COC in the top of the second with a triple by sophomore Colton Burns that scored two, and a two-run home run by Bible that put COC up 7-0.
The Cougars got two more in the top of the fifth from a solo home run by sophomore Darren Kriz and an unearned run that followed to make it 9-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth.
The Vaqueros then got hot and shifted the momentum with a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth, an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, two RBI singles in the seventh, and a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game.
The walk-off single in the ninth clinched victory for the Vaqueros.
Burns and Bible each had three RBIs to lead the Cougars. Lepre led with three hits and added two RBIs. Sophomore Wyatt Hoppie drew three walks in the game.
Canyons will look to even the series when they host Glendale on Thursday, April 21, at Cougar Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
