Canyons Gets First Win in 13-5 Slugfest vs. Allan Hancock

Following a 20-minute rain delay, the bats of the College of the Canyons baseball team came alive with the Cougars erupting for a 13-5 home victory vs. Allan Hancock College for the team's first win of the season.

Canyons (1-3) scored in all but two innings while belting four home runs in the contest.

The Cougars got started right away in the first inning with leadoff man Cole Kleszcz reaching on an error before third baseman Calvin Estrada eventually drove him home with an RBI single to left field.

In the next frame COC was right back it, this time scoring on a solo home run from designated hitter Blake Doremus, his first of the season, to make it a 2-0 ballgame.

Doremus would also double in two more runs in the third inning to give the Cougars a 4-1 advantage. He finished the game 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs, a walk, three runs and four RBIs.

The Cougars plated five runs in the fourth inning thanks to a grand slam from sophomore catcher Anthony Lepre and an RBI single from Wes Felber that gave COC a 9-1 lead.

That would be plenty of support for COC starting pitcher Chase Wheatcroft (1-0) who earned his first win of the season while striking out four batters and surrendering four runs in his five innings of work.

Jacob Lopez pitched three innings of relief while limiting the Bulldogs to just one run on four hits. COC reliever Jarrett Poh also saw some work in the top of the ninth and struck out the side.

Kleszcz finished the day 2-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs. Felber, Anthony Medina and Ivan Lomelli each had two hits apiece.
