No. 14 College of the Canyons participated in the annual Allan Hancock Spring Classic Baseball Tournament April 11-13, with the Cougars posting a 2-1 record on the road trip.
No. 18 Merced College vs. No. 14 Canyons — Tuesday, April 11
Canyons opened tournament play with a 4-3 win over Merced College (21-11), as freshman Jacob Lopez and the Cougar bullpen were able to hold off a mid-game rally by the Blue Devils.
Lopez (3-2) picked up the win after throwing five and 1/3 innings and battling control issues throughout. The freshman walked six batters, but helped to neutralize those ill effects by also recording six strikeouts.
Sophomore Sean Ward and Connor Dreyer combined to shutout the Blue Devils over the final three and 2/3 innings. Dreyer recorded his fourth save after pitching the final frame.
At the plate, James Scanlan finished the game 1-for-2 with a double, run and two RBIs to lead the Cougars.
No. 14 Canyons vs. No. 12 Cypress College — Wednesday, April 12
Canyons received home runs from Cole Kleszcz, James Scanlan and Ivan Lomeli in the game, while Anthony Medina finished 3-for-5 on the day.
COC starter Justin Dehn (4-2) suffered the loss after allowing five runs, three earned, and walking five batters over six innings. He also struck out five.
Jarett Poh relived Dehn and pitched two scoreless innings, while fanning three batters.
No. 14 Canyons vs. East Los Angeles College — Thursday, April 13
Canyons entered the sixth inning trailing by a 6-2 score, but rallied to down East Los Angeles College (14-10) by a 10-7score to cap the tourney and head home on a high note.
The Cougars plated three runs in the top half of the ninth inning on an RBI double by James Scanlan and a two-run single from Cole Kleszcz that brought Wes Felber home with the winning run.
COC relief pitcher Robert Hermer got the win after throwing three innings and allowing one earned run.
Sophomore Chase Wheatcroft got the start but gave way to Jack Kernochan in the third inning. Sean Ward was credited with the save.
