Cougars on Losing End of 7-3 Ballgame

TORRANCE, Calif. — A day after earning an Opening Day extra-innings victory College of the Canyons turned up on the losing end of a 7-3 decision that concluded its two-game home and away series with El Camino College .

Canyons (1-1) scratched out three runs in a big sixth inning, but was otherwise held in check by ECC starting pitcher Trevor Talpas, who earned the win after a six-inning, six strikeout performance.

COC freshman Eddie Rodriguez put the Cougars on the board with an RBI double in the top of the sixth, with Tyler Erne later bringing Rodriguez and and Trace Elridge around two score on an RBI-single of his own. Erne finished 2-for-4 on the day.

Ivan Lomeli and Corbin Williams both recorded a pair of hits for the Cougars.

COC sophomore Jackson Cunningham got the start for Canyons, lasting four and 2/3 innings and allowing five runs on four hits and three walks. He also struck out four batters.

The combination of Anthony Gomez, Matt Boyce and Chase Marcoe pitched the rest of the way, with Boyce charged for two runs in the home half of the seventh.

Canyons returns to action at 2 p.m. on Tuesday in a road game vs. Cerritos College.
