SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Freshman quarterbacks Jake Dashnaw and Tony Dawson combined for 206 passing yards and three touchdowns to lead College of the Canyons to a 42-14 win over Bakersfield College at Cougar Stadium on Saturday night.
Dashnaw was 14-of-17 for 113 yards and a score, while Dawson was a perfect 8-of-8 for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Neither signal caller had an interception or was sacked. Dawson also led the team in rushing with 66 yards on 10 carries and tight end Dan Vear lead the receiving corps with five catches for 65 yards.
The Canyons defense held the Renegades to 194 yards and just 58 rushing yards. The conference's leading running back, Preston Hodges of Bakersfield, was limited to just 78 yards and a score, with his longest carry going for 13 yards.
Following Eric Kreitz's field goal that was blocked to start the second quarter, Hodges dropped his first of two fumbles on the Bakersfield 20-yard line. Freshman Austin Murillo scooped the ball up and ran it 20 yards to the end zone for the first Canyons score, giving the Cougars a 7-0 advantage with 13:17 left in the second quarter.
Dawson extended the lead to 14-0, capping a 10-play, 62-yard drive that finished with a 21-yard pass to freshman wide receiver Vincent Strange.
The Cougars' defense gave up their first touchdown of the game on the following possession, after Bakersfield had returned COC's kickoff 51-yards to give themselves a short field.
Dawson was quick to react however, marching the Cougars 72 yards down the field and topping the drive off with a 13-yard pass to sophomore wide receiver Louis Gipson with 21 seconds left before halftime.
Canyons opened the second half with a pair of touchdowns – a 10-yard carry by Matt Bowen and a Dashnaw 20-yard pass to Travion Tucker – giving Canyons a 35-7 lead after three quarters.
The Cougars added one more score in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard Da'John Gaines punch into the end zone. Bakersfield would eventually find the end zone a second time, capitalizing on an 8-yard touchdown pass.
The victory marks the first time that College of the Canyons has beat the Renegades since 2008, after losing seven of the last eight match ups against their neighbor to the north.
The Cougars will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 12, when they host Antelope Valley College in a non-conference match up. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
