Canyons Takes Big Step Forward with 41-22 Victory Over Moorpark
COC’s defense comes up big with four takeaways and four sacks
MOORPARK, Calif. —The COC football team took a big step forward Saturday, handily defeating Moorpark College 41-22.
Since their Week 3 victory over Santa Ana, the Cougars have alternated wins and losses spanning their last seven games.
The victory, however, ensures a chance to finish the season at .500 and an outside chance of earning a postseason bowl berth.
The Cougars' defense led the way to victory, coming up with four takeaways and four sacks.
The Cougars earned their first interception of the game via a Triston Brown interception of Moorpark quarterback Nick Davis in the COC red zone. Brown's interception ended a Moorpark drive that threatened to open the scoring in the first quarter.
COC would not score on the ensuing drive but would quickly get another chance to capitalize on another Moorpark turnover.
Canyons corner back Jalen Davis intercepted a Nick Davis pass at the Moorpark 41 yard line. On the ensuing drive, RB Sean Bar scored a two-yard rushing touchdown for COC's first score of the game. An extra point by Eric Kreitz gave COC a 7-0 lead.
In the second quarter, the Cougars added to their lead after a Moorpark field goal. COC quarterback Devon Dunn connected with Earl Johnson for a 16-yard touchdown to bring the Cougars lead to 14-3 heading into halftime.
Dunn would finish the game completing 7-of-8 passes with 78 yards passing.
The Cougars offense would come out firing in the third quarter scoring 21 points to put the game out of reach.
On COC's first drive of the second half, quarterback Tony Dawson rushed for a 14-yard touchdown to put the Cougars up 21-3 early in the third quarter.
After a Moorpark touchdown made the score 21-10, COC responded on its next offensive series. On the next play from scrimmage, Dawson completed a pass to Linwood Foy for 58 yards that put COC in the Moorpark red zone.
Two plays later, Tony Dawson would run for another touchdown, this time from seven yards out. An Eric Kreitz extra point gave COC a 28-10 lead.
The Cougars would close out the third quarter with a three-yard Tylan McBride rushing touchdown to close the quarter with a 35-10 lead.
Eric Kreitz added two more field goals in the fourth quarter to top off the rout of Moorpark College with a score of 41-22.
The Cougars ended up amassing 399 yards of total offense for the game, but much of its damage was done in the running game. Running back Tylan McBride had a strong performance with 126 yards rushing on 16 carries and one touchdown.
Tony Dawson finished the game with 62 yards rushing with two touchdowns.
