Cougars Tip-off Season with Win Over Cuyamaca
Sophomore guard Coley Apsay leads COC with a game-high 13 points
The College of the Canyons men's basketball team started off the 2014-15 season with a 62-55 win over Cuyamaca at its home 'Clash at Canyons' Tournament.
Moving to 1-0, the Cougars strong teamwork was reflected in the final stat line.
Sophomore guard Coley Apsay led COC with a game-high 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Teammate Ricardo Greaves chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds from the forward slot.
Notable on Friday was COC's defense, which held visiting Cuyamaca to a lowly 27.8 percent field goal percentage throughout the game. The Coyotes didn't fare any better from behind the arc, shooting just 18.8 percent from behind the three-point line.
While the Cougars won on Friday, there were some points of emphasis that COC will look to address as the season progresses.
COC reached the free throw line 17 times compared to 28 times for the Coyotes. Additionally, the Coyotes bench outscored the COC bench 18-12.
Cougars forward Tulio Perry contributed 10 points in 29 minutes, and teammate Victor Nwaba rounded out the scoring for COC with 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting.
With the win, Canyons will advance to the tournament's championship game vs. East Los Angeles College, at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8.
