IRVINE, Calif. — The College of the Canyons men's basketball team weathered five ties and eight lead changes to down a pesky Long Beach City College squad 59-57 in the second round of the Irvine Valley College Classic on Sunday.
Leading the way for the Cougars was guard Coley Apsay, who finished with 19 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Forward Branden Otero was efficient, pouring in 11 points on just five shots for COC, while Tullio Perry contributed seven points and seven rebounds down low.
The difference for COC proved to be the play of guard Brodric Smith, who came off the bench to go 4-for-4 for 11 points in the close win.
Despite their winning record, the Cougars have struggled at times with shooting percentage and turnovers. Yet the team has overcome those factors to begin the season with a 3-1 record.
Canyons will face now face Irvine Valley College in the tournament's championship game on Saturday.
