Following an opening day win against Cuyamaca, the College of the Canyons men's basketball team was unable to come up with the answers against a determined East LA squad, falling 76-67 in the championship game of the 2014 'Clash at Canyons' Tournament.
COC guard Coley Apsay used a strong performance from the free throw line to tally a team-high 14 points in the loss, in which the Cougars were unable to contain East L.A. forward Richard Bivens.
Bivens finished with a double-double, scoring 20 points and grabbing 13 rebounds for a Huskies squad that led 41-29 at halftime.
For his performance, Apsay was named to the 2014 Clash at Canyons All-Tournament Team. East L.A, teammates Treshon Burton and Marquis Salmon were also included among the all-tourney honorees, with Salmon taking home MVP honors.
For the second straight game, the Cougars struggled with turnovers, allowing East L.A. to score 22 points as a direct result of COC giveaways.
COC forwards Brenden Otero and Ricardo Greaves held their own down low, combining for 22 points and 10 rebounds.
The Cougars outscored East LA 38-34 in the second half, however, the large halftime deficit proved too great to overcome in total.
Next up for COC (1-1) is a showdown with conference rival Ventura College at the Irvine Valley College Classic, which begins Thursday, Nov. 20.
