The College of the Canyons men's basketball team began the Western State Conference (WSC) season at home, but came up short to Antelope Valley College 83-76 on Wednesday night.
Four of the Cougars' starting five scored in double figures, with Brenden Otero leading the charge with 18 points on 5-for-7 shooting night.
Along with Otero, forwards Tullio Parry (11 points and eight rebounds) and Ricardo Greaves (10 points and two steals) played well in solidifying the COC frontcourt.
COC guard Coley Apsay also chipped in with 12 points and six assists.
Antelope Valley shot 49 percent from the field and was led by forward Ismail Ali's 18 points.
While COC finished the game with an edge in made free throws, the 18 turnovers proved too many for head coach Howard Fisher's squad to overcome.
Canyons (8-6, 0-1) will next travel to Santa Monica (5-8) on Saturday for its second conference game of the season.
Last season, the Cougars went 9-1 in conference play, eventually advancing to the third round of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Regional Playoffs.
