A tough shooting night by the Cougars and a three-point barage from the Monarchs resulted in the College of the Canyons men's basketball team falling to L.A. Valley 81-72 in front of a home crowd on Wednesday night.
COC (9-7, 1-2) shot 40 percent from the field as a team in the loss.
The Cougars managed to hold their Western State Conference, South rival L.A. Valley in check for much of the game, but the Monarchs eventually pulled away by shooting a 50 percent clip from beyond the arc.
Stat wise, the two teams were comparable across the board, but L.A. Valley's Jordan Brown scored a game-high 41 points on a 10-of-15 shooting performance, while converting 16 of his 18 free throw attempts, to make the difference.
Leading the way for COC was sophomore guard Coley Apsay, who scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to go with three assists. Teammate Chance Cole added 12 points with four rebounds.
The Cougars will next host Glendale College at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
