College of the Canyons sophomore guard Jacob Lilley paced the Cougars with 19 points and the Cougars were able to rally from a steep second half deficit to pull out a thrilling 73-68 victory over West L.A. College in the Cougar Cage on Wednesday.
Lilly, who connected on 12-of-14 free throws along the way, also registered three steals and seven rebounds.
Michael Kalu and Philip Webb each scored 10 points. Webb added 11 rebounds to post a double-double for the Cougars.
Canyons (11-12, 2-2) scored the game's first five points, before the Wildcats went on a 10-2 run to grab a lead they would carry through the duration of the first half.
A layup from Webb cut the lead to two with under two minutes remaining in the opening half, but West L.A. 's Mark Carter answered back with a layup of his own to beat the halftime horn and the Wildcats entered intermission with a 33-29 lead.
The Wildcats (15-9, 2-2) started the second half strong and grew their lead to 11 points on a three point play from Jerry Anthony with just over 13 minutes to go.
But the Cougars were able to slowly chip away at the Wildcats' lead, and eventually shrunk the deficit to four on a Lilley three-pointer with just under eight minutes to play.
Webb tied the score on a layup with 5:20 remaining, the first time the score had been tied since the early minutes of the game.
The Cougars finally took a lead it would never relinquish at 62-60 when Robert Moss connected on a deep three with 4:43 remaining in the half.
Canyons pushed the lead to as many as six twice more in a back-and-forth battle filled with trips to the foul line.
Eventually, Jeremy Hwang was able to convert on one of two free throws to give COC a five-point lead with 10 seconds remaining.
The Cougars will return to the court on at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, in a conference matchup vs. L.A. Pierce College.
