College of the Canyons competed in the Southern Californian Invitational at El Camino Country Club in Oceanside on Monday, finishing ninth in a field of 19 schools from across the region.
The tourney, which served as a preview of the upcoming California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Championship on May 8, was also considered a Western State Conference (WSC) neutral site event.
The five-man score of 400 turned in by Canyons was good for fourth among the field of eight WSC teams. Ventura (383), Santa Barbara City College (391), Citrus College (394) finished first, second and third, respectively.
Saddleback College was the overall event winner with a score of 377. Orange Coast College (378), Riverside (380) and Ventura were next in the clubhouse.
COC freshman Alexander Laendin was the low man for the Cougars with a round of 78.
The Cougars rank second in the WSC, one point behind Ventura and four points ahead of third place SBCC.
Individually, Taplin ranks third in the conference with 301 strokes through the first four tournaments of the year.
Canyons will next tee off at Santa Maria Country Club at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 27, at the WSC event hosted by Allan Hancock College.
