Canyons Begins Title Defense with Tourney Win at Pt. Conception Open

LOMPOC, Calif. — College of the Canyons started its state championship title defense in convincing fashion, carding a two-day score of 743 (375/368) to win the 14-team Pt. Conception Open at La Purisima by 29 strokes.

Cypress College finished in second place at 772 (383/389) followed by third place Ventura College 781 (401/380), fourth place College of the Desert at 784 (394/390) and Santa Barbara City College taking the fifth spot with a score of 785 (390/395).

Individually, COC freshman Jones Comerford tied for second place with his two-day score of 146 (73/73). That result left Comerford just one stroke behind event medalist Joey Herrera (145-73/72) of Ventura College.

Michael Lindgren was not far behind with his fourth place score of 147 (74/73), while Clemente Yanes was the day-two medalist with a round of 71. Clemente finished at 148 (77/71) to claim the fifth spot.

The Cougars featured eight players at the event, with the top five scores from each round counting towards the final tally.

Corey Hasse began his season with score of 149 (75/74) and Clayton Kucera ended the tourney with a mark of 153 (76/77).

Michael Lotta went into the books at 155 (74/81), Matthew Mansholt finished at 159 (78/81), while Mitch Beohm rounded out the scoring at 165 (84/81).

The Cougars, winners of the 2017 CCCAA State Championship, will return to action Monday, Feb. 5, for Western State Conference event No. 1, being played at Valencia Country Club. Tee time is at 10 a.m.
