SOLVANG — College of the Canyons sophomore Jules Lavigne shot a one-under round of 71 to earn medalist honors and freshman Hugo Amsallem placed second as the Cougars won their third straight Western State Conference (WSC) tourney at Alisal River Golf Course on Monday.
COC posted a season-best score of 366 to hold off tourney host Santa Barbara City College at 373. Third place Ventura (395) was followed by Antelope Valley (407), Glendale (410), Bakersfield (412), Citrus (438) and Allan Hancock (440).
Canyons has now won all three WSC tournaments, while seeing its players claim medalist honors in two of those events. COC is 21-0 on the season. The Cougars have won six straight events dating back to last season's WSC Finals.
Lavigne, who earned All-State team honors and helped the Cougars to a state title a year ago, turned in his best round of the young season after not playing at WSC No. 2 a week ago. He and Amsallem, who carded an even par 72, led Canyons throughout the day.
Amsallem's score tied with Preston Gomersall and Igor Haenel from Santa Barbara.
COC freshman Matty Wilson was just a couple shots off that pace and ended the day tie tied for fifth with SBCC golfer Matt Pate at 73.
Felix Schrott and Shuya Hagiwara tied for the No. 7 spots with identical rounds of 75 for Canyons.
Sophomore Nobuhiko Wakaari had his score of 80 dropped from the final total.
The Cougars will take a brief break from conference competition by playing at the Riverside City College Invitational on Feb. 24 at Victoria Country Club. Tee time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
