SANTA CLARITA, Calif. —Jesus Pescador notched the lone Cougar goal ensuring a 1-0 season-opening victory for the College of the Canyons men's soccer team over El Camino-Compton Center on Aug. 29.
El Camino-Compton had a chance on goal early on, but were turned away by Cougars goalkeeper Steven Rodriguez in the 13th minute. El Camino also had a corner kick opportunity that came up empty in the 18th minute.
The Cougars quickly countered with a shot on goal by midfielder Maynor Alcaraz, but were denied by El Camino-Compton goalkeeper Robert Garcia in the 21st minute.
Despite the game remaining scoreless heading into the break, the Cougars outshot El Camino-Compton 4-3 in the first half.
The second half began with a barrage of attacks on offense by the Cougars.
Within four minutes of the start of the second half, the Canyons was looking to open up the scoring with two corner kicks and a shot that went wide of goal by Cougars defender Eddie Gomez.
But in the 65th minute, Cougars midfielder Jesus Pescador stole an errant ball from an El Camino-Compton defender, leading to a breakaway chance along the left-hand side and ending with Pescador netting his first goal of the season.
The score would turn out to be the game-winner for COC.
COC outshot El Camino-Compton Center 10-6 in the game. Meanwhile, Canyons goalkeeper Steven Rodriguez earned a clean sheet with three saves over the 90 minutes.
