SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – In a physical, hard-fought game, the College of the Canyons men's soccer team suffered a heart-breaking 2-1 loss to Taft College under the lights at Cougar Stadium on Tuesday night.
The first half saw a flurry of action in front of Canyons goalkeeper Steven Rodriguez's net, including a penalty kick in the 43rd minute that was saved by Rodriguez. Rodriguez also made two other rebound saves immediately after the Taft missed penalty kick, keeping the game scoreless at the half.
Taft outshot COC 8-4 in the first half forcing six saves from Canyons goalkeeper Steven Rodriguez.
The second half scoring opened with a goal by Taft's Ruben Alvarez giving Taft a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute.
COC almost immediately answered back a minute later with a shot by forward Andy Ruiz, but was ultimately turned away by Taft goalkeeper Juan Cisneros.
In the 75th minute Taft defender Ramon Chavez was given a red card for taking down a Canyons attacker in the penalty box. COC's Andres Lozano scored the penalty kick, tying the game at 1-1 in the 76th minute.
COC had only been playing with the man advantage for a few minutes when the referee handed a red card to COC midfielder Brian Cano in the 78th minute.
Moments later, Taft netted the game-winner when Oscar Torres scored on an assist from Aldahir Perez, putting Taft up for good 2-1.
The loss drops College of the Canyons to 1-1-0 on the season.
The Cougars will next travel to Visalia to take on College of the Sequoias at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12.
