SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Two second-half goals from Andy Ruiz were enough to hold off a late Moorpark College rally, as College of the Canyons held on to win its eighth game of the season, 2-1.
College of the Canyons had the lion's share of opportunities throughout the match and outshot Moorpark 19-3, with seven shots on goal.
The first half ended scoreless, but the Cougars had their chances in front of the Moorpark goal.
The Cougars would finally tally a score in the 53rd minute when Andy Ruiz scored his first goal of the match. Johnathan Trujillo fed a pass to Ruiz just outside the goal box, and Ruiz found space and fired a long shot past Moorpark keeper Luis Monroy for the 1-0 lead.
Ruiz netted his second goal in the 63rd minute after COC defender Juan Camacho played a ball into the box that found Ruiz ready to flick the ball just across the goal line for a 2-0 lead.
Moorpark would try to make a late comeback, scoring a goal in the 76th minute, but it was not enough and Canyons was able to run out the clock for a 2-1 victory.
The Cougars dominated the second half outshooting Moorpark 14-1. Moorpark were able to score on its only shot on goal.
Tuesday's victory ups COC's record to 8-2-5 and to 6-1-5 against conference opponents. This was COC's second victory against Moorpark this season. The Cougars defeated Moorpark 6-0 on Sept. 26.
COC will next travel to Allan Hancock for a game at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31.
