The College of the Canyons men's soccer team rallied from a 2-0 deficit, to earn a 3-3 draw vs. visiting Santa Barbara City College in the team's home opener on Tuesday night, under the lights at Cougar Stadium.
Canyons (0-4-2) is still seeking its first win of the season, but showed tremendous resilience in battling back against a Santa Barbara (5-1-1) team that started the season with four consecutive wins.
The Vaqueros were able to find the net first, as Canyons gave up an unassisted goal to forward Nicolas Genthon in the ninth minute.
Less than three minutes later, SBCC was at it again as Carlos Calde came up with another unassisted score to make it 2-0 early in the first half.
But head coach Phil Marcellin's squad was quick to respond.
In the 17th minute, COC sophomore midfielder Johnathan Trujillo took a pass from forward Andy Ruiz and booted the ball into the back of the net to make it a 2-1 game in the 17th minute. Trujillo's goal was his first of the year.
Roughly seven minutes later sophomore midfielder Zachary Nua took advantage of a Cougar scoring opportunity to even the game at 2-2.
In the second half Calde put SBCC ahead 3-2, allowing the Vaqueros to go into defensive mode while trying to close out the game.
However, the Cougars would not be denied on their home field. In the 78th minute sophomore Kaonnye Opazo netted his first goal of the season, on a pass from Luis Arriaga, to tie the game once again at 3-3.
Canyons will continue its conference schedule when the Cougars travel to Allan Hancock College at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29.
