The College of the Canyons men's soccer team dropped a conference match to visiting Antelope Valley College on Friday, with the Cougars unable to battle back from a late deficit.
Canyons (5-10-1, 1-3-0) trailed 2-1 heading into the second half of play, but an AVC goal from Jose Mojica, who leads the Western State Conference in scoring, during the 84th minute helped seal the Cougars' fate.
COC surrendered an early 1-0 lead on a Marauder goal in the eighth minute. But less than six minutes later sophomore midfielder Aaaron Winsick netted an equalizer for his first goal of the season. The scoring play came by way of an assist from sophomore defender Kevin Rivas.
Antelope Valley managed to break the tie and take a 2-1 lead with Mojica's first goal of the game at the 31-minute mark.
After Mojica extended the AVC lead to 3-1, COC freshman forward Jose Ruiz scored his third goal of the season in the 90th minute, moments before the match eventually went final.
Canyons goalkeeper Cristian Arriaga (5-10-1) was tagged with the loss. He was credited with four saves in the game.
COC outshot the Marauders 29-14, but came up just short at the final whistle.
The Cougars will travel to face Citrus College in a conference match at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25.
