Freshman midfielder Frank Ornelas scored a pair of bookend goals, and also added an assist, to help College of the Canyons earn a 4-1 conference victory over visiting Glendale College.
After a mostly quiet first half, Ornelas took a pass from Dylan Sullivan and converted to give Canyons an early 1-0 advantage in the 39th minute.
Ornelas stayed involved in the attack and helped facilitate a second Canyons score, this time sending a nice touch to Enrique Gutierrez who beat the keeper to make it 2-0 in the 44th minute.
Glendale opened the second-half scoring in the 62nd minute with a free kick goal from Andrew Senane.
With the score lingering at 2-1, Sullivan gave the Cougars some extra breathing room with an unassisted goal in the 87th minute.
Moments later, Ornelas closed out the scoring with his second goal of the game, and fourth of the season, to make it a 4-1 final score.
Glendale recorded just four shots in the game thanks to a strong performance from the Cougars' back line. COC had 16 shots in the game and earned seven corner kicks.
Canyons keeper Kian Bensend earned the win in net.
The win, which pushed the Cougars' unbeaten streak to four games, has vaulted COC (3-10-3, 2-2-2) into a second-place tie with Glendale (10-7-3, 2-2-2) in the Western State Conference (WSC), South Division standings. Both teams trail conference leader Antelope Valley College (7-5-6, 2-1-3) by a single point with two games to go.
Canyons will travel to face Antelope Valley at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12.
