Bio

Phil Marcellin enters his 21st season at the helm of the College of the Canyons men’s soccer program and his 31st year working in California community college soccer. He has coached the COC men’s team since its inaugural season in 2003, leading the squad to a 140-178-77 overall record in that span.

In 2018, the Cougars turned in an historic season by winning the first Western State Conference (WSC) Championship in program history and moving on to the postseason for the fourth time under Marcellin. Canyons also qualified for the post-season in 2004 before suffering a playoff loss to Moorpark in overtime. The second postseason berth came in 2009 when the Cougars made a remarkable run to the third round of the CCCAA SoCal Regional Playoffs. In 2010, Marcellin led the Cougars all the way to the CCCAA State Championship match — the farthest COC has ever advanced into the postseason — before eventually falling to defending state champions Mt. San Antonio College.

Marcellin started his College of the Canyons coaching career in 1998 after being hired to teach physical education and launch the COC women’s soccer program. He coached the women’s program for 11 seasons from 1998 to 2008 posting an overall record of 121-95-34 while winning four Western State Conference (WSC) Championships (1999, 2000, 2001 and 2004) and qualifying for postseason play five times. He was also named WSC Coach of the Year in 1999.

Prior to arriving at COC, Marcellin coached women’s soccer at Bakersfield College from 1993 to 1997, leading the team to a 58-30-18 record, while recording two WSC Championships (1994 and 1995), one state final four appearance (1994) and earning WSC Coach of the Year honors in 1994.

Marcellin is a former WSC men’s soccer representative and is a past president of the California Community College Soccer Coaches Association, having served in that position from 2006 to 2008.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in physical education from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1990 and a Master of Science in physical education from the University of Toledo in 1992.

Marcellin and his wife Michelle are the proud parents of four daughters Sophia, Sascha, Greta and Ava.
