COC Uses Two Strong Innings To Complete Sweep of Glendale

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – In the second game of a double header against Glendale College, Canyons beat the Vaqueros 8-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Whitten Field. With the victory, the Cougars improved to 11-10 overall and 8-1 in conference play.

A big third and sixth innings proved to be the difference as Canyons outhit Glendale, 13-8. Canyons' Nicole Maliniemi paced COC with three hits and two RBIs.

Morgan Simmons (6-5) earned her sixth collegiate victory, allowing three runs on eight hits. She struck out five in seven innings of work.

After Glendale opened the scoring with two runs in the third inning, the Cougars responded quickly with a trio of singles in the bottom half of the inning. With bases loaded, Katelyn Lent turned in a single and a throwing error gave COC two runs to tie up the game. Two batters later Venise Elisara notched a RBI single to bring Bickford across the place. Nicole Maliniemi followed with her own RBI single and drove in Correa, to give COC a 4-2 lead.

Glendale evened the score in the top of the fifth inning, but Canyons would not allow the Vaqueros to surge ahead.

Kori Cochran broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with a RBI single to left field, but a Vaquero miscue allowed two other runners to score and take a 7-4 lead. Things got worse for Glendale as the pitcher walked three COC players, including one walk that scored another run for Canyons.

The Cougars will host Antelope Valley College on Thursday, March 27 for a 2:30 p.m. game.
