SAN MARCOS, Calif. — The College of the Canyons softball team dropped both games of an out-of-conference doubleheader – losing 2-0 in Game 1 and 9-1 in Game 2 – to host Palomar College on Saturday afternoon.
It was two impressive pitching performances by Palomar starting pitcher Summer Evans that sunk the Cougars.
Despite COC starter Milana Casillas' best efforts in Game 1, the Cougars could not muster enough hits to overcome a two-run deficit in seven innings.
Casillas pitched six innings while allowing only three hits, five walks and two runs.
However, Evans faced just four batters over the minimum in her seven innings of shutout work.
Palomar's only runs came in the third inning when third baseman Iesha Hill singled to score the Comets' only two runs in the game.
That was more than what they needed to defeat the Cougars for a 2-0 final in seven innings.
Game 2 did not go any better for the Cougars.
Evans returned to the pitcher's circle and frustrated head coach's Jon Wissmath's lineup again, this time scattering nine hits, while striking out six batters and allowing just one run over nine innings.
After going 2-for-3 in Game 1, COC's Lauren Anderson continued her hot hitting in Game 2 with a 2-for-2 effort that also included an RBI and a walk.
Anderson is now batting .561 to lead the Western State Conference. She also has 12 home runs and 42 RBIs.
The two losses drop COC's record to 26-10-1 overall. The Cougars will take a 13-6 Western State Conference, Blue Division record into the regular season's final day.
COC's next two games wrap up the regular season, as the Cougars travel to L.A. Valley College to play in an afternoon doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21.
