No. 10 Canyons Splits Home Doubleheader with Riverside City College

No. 10 College of the Canyons split a home doubleheader with Riverside City College on Saturday, winning the first game 14-9 and falling 6-4 in the second affair.

On Saturday, the Cougars recorded a combined 24 hits on the day to continue its prodigious offensive output. Canyons is batting .436 on the season to rank second in the state.
COC scored runs in the first five innings of the opener to establish an early 8-1 lead.
In the home half of the third Heidi Ludy doubled in a run, before Katie Clinkunbroomer drew a bases loaded walk that scored Sienna Vannoy. That set up Melanie Abzun, who capped the inning with a three-run double to deep center field.
The Tigers posted a six-run fourth inning to briefly seize the momentum and draw to within 8-7, but Canyons would quickly score five runs of its own on RBI singles from Vannoy, Bailey Bodkin and Abzun.
Abzun finished the game 2-for-5 with five RBIs and a walk. Vannoy was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs and Clinkunbroomer went 1-for-2 with two walks, one run and three RBIs.
COC starter Alexis Ramirez (9-1) earned the win. She allowed five earned runs, walking three and striking out six in her six and 1/3 inning of work.
In the second game, Canyons opened up an early 3-0 lead on an RBI single from Alexis Avila in the second inning and a two-run home run from Azmarheen Anderson in the third inning.
But it was the Tigers' five-run fifth inning that turned the tide and gave Riverside a 5-3 advantage. Both teams scored runs in the seventh to bring the game to a 6-4 final.
COC starter Sarah Wilson (4-3) took the loss, allowing five runs in her four and 1/3 innings of work.
Canyons will next host Citrus College in a home doubleheader Tuesday, March 21. Games are scheduled for 1 & 3 p.m.
