No. 10 Canyons Outscores Glendale 30-5 to Sweep Home Doubleheader

Freshman Micayla Aguilar recorded nine RBIs and No. 10 College of the Canyons outscored Glendale College 30-5 at Whitten Field on Tuesday, sweeping its conference doubleheader by scores of 19-3 and 11-2.

The 19 runs scored by Canyons (20-5-1, 7-2) in the first game represented a season-high for the Cougars who have now posted double-digit run totals in 13 contests this season. The two-game total of 30 runs is the second best span of the season. COC opened the year by scoring a combined 33 runs in the first two games on the schedule.

The Cougars currently lead the Western State Conference (WSC) with a .413 team batting average, also ranking first in hits (291), slugging percentage (.643), runs (251), RBIs (209), home runs (24) and doubles (62).

COC's offensive explosion was highlighted by Aguilar's nine-RBI performance. The freshman doubled in a pair of runs in the first inning of the opener, then blasted a three-run home run in the fifth inning. Aguilar later doubled home two more runs to finish the first game 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

Freshman Heidi Ludy drove home three runs on a 2-for-3 day at the plate, as did sophomore Azmarheen Anderson who finished 2-for-2 with two doubles and a pair of runs.

COC pitchers Alexis Ramirez and Sarah Wilson combined to hold the Vaqueros (6-15, 2-5) in check for the entire five-inning affair.

Wilson (7-3) earned the win on her two and 1/3 hitless innings of work.

The Cougars picked up right where they left off in game two, taking a 9-2 lead into the sixth inning before freshman Sienna Vannoy ended the game on a walk-off two-run home run to left field.

Vannoy finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs.

Aguilar was also active in game two, swatting two more hits to finish the day 4-for-6 with a walk, nine RBIs and five runs. Likewise, Ludy added two more RBIs to finish with five on the day.

COC freshman Katie Taix (3-0) got the start and lasted four innings, allowing four hits, three walks and two earned runs. Ramirez then provided two innings of scoreless relief to pick up her second save of the season.

The Cougars, winners in seven of the last eight games, will travel to Allan Hancock College on Thursday, March 30. First pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
