No. 9 Canyons Sees Season End at CCCAA SoCal Super Regional

No. 9 College of the Canyons had its season come to an end at the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Super Regional after suffering back-to-back loses to No. 1 Cypress College and No. 5 Santiago Canyon College last weekend.

Canyons (30-13-1, 13-5) dropped the first contest to host Cypress by a 5-1 score on Friday after taking a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning. However, the Chargers were able to plate five unanswered runs to fight off the Cougars.

COC's lone run came off the bat of sophomore Azmarheen Anderson who lifted a solo home run in the top of the second inning. Anderson finished the game 2-for-3 to lead the Cougars.

Sophomore pitcher Alexis Ramirez (13-8) was charged with the loss after being removed before the start of the fifth inning with COC trailing 2-1. She allowed two earned runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout.

On Saturday, the Cougars pushed across a run in both the first and second innings to take an early 2-1 lead vs. Santiago Canyon. That early advantage would prove to be short-lived, with the Hawks rallying for a five-run third inning to steal the momentum en route to a 9-5 victory.

Anderson scored an unearned run in the first inning and Melanie Abzun walked to bring home a run in the second. But Canyons was unable to get much going after that.

Anderson singled in another run in the top of the sixth and Abzun followed up with a two-run home run that got the Cougars a bit closer. But COC was unable to pull off the comeback.

Freshman Katie Taix (6-2) took the loss after surrendering five earned runs in four innings of work.

Abzun finished the game 1-for-3 with a walk, a run and three RBIs. Anderson was 3-for-3 with a walk, two runs and an RBI.

Cypress went on to win the Super Regional bracket with back-to-back wins over No. 4 Palomar College on Saturday and Sunday. The Chargers will now advance to the CCCAA State Championships tourney May 19-21.
