GLENDALE — College of the Canyons powered past Glendale College in extra innings by a 4-2 final score to earn its second straight conference victory on Thursday.

Canyons (14-7-1, 2-2) is now .500 against Western State Conference (WSC), East Division and .659 overall, having won three of its last four games.

COC freshman Allyson Melgar (8-4) was instrumental in the victory, leading her team from the circle and at the plate to defeat the Vaqueros.

Glendale (5-19, 0-5) was quick to put up a run in the first inning but Canyons soon answered, tying the game 1-1 in the second inning.

That's where things stayed for the next five innings, eventually sending the game into an extra frame.

The eight-inning standoff was disrupted when Melgar smacked her first home run of the season, a two-run shot, that highlighted a three-run Canyons surge.

The Vaqueros managed to push one more run across, but it wasn't enough as Canyons headed home with the 4-2 victory.

The Cougar lineup also saw RBIs from Ashlynn Heck and Memorie Muñoz in the game. Heck now leads the team with 19 RBIs on the season. Julia Fuentes and Brianne Tall are next at 18 each.
