Wong Shatters Two School Records at Conference Finals

VALLEY GLEN, Calif. – College of the Canyons swimmer Phillip Wong broke two school records on Saturday afternoon at the Western State Conference Finals at LA Valley College, helping the men's team come in seventh place and the women's team finish in 11th place.

The COC men garnered 111 points to finish in seventh place. Ventura College won the conference championship with 615 points and Cuesta College turned in 585 points, good for second place. On the women's side, Canyons tallied 88 points to come in 10th place. Bakersfield College won the 10-team event with 607 points and LA Valley College turned in a second-place performance with 554 points.

Wong narrowly lost to first-place finisher Nick Vallejo (50.50) of Ventura College in the 100-yard butterfly with his school record time of 50.98. He finished off his afternoon breaking his second record of the meet with a time of 1:59.57 in the 200-yard butterfly. Ventura's Christopher Sands came in first place in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:52.51, while Wong beat out third-place Steven Jalomo of Santa Monica by less than a second.

For the women, Monica Hamilton came in ninth place in the 50-yard breaststroke after finishing the race in 35.19, while Brandi Tyson turned in a 10th-place finish in the 50-yard backstroke (31.03).
