Canyons Swim Teams Net Pair of Third Place Finishes
Both the COC men's and women's teams take third at WSC Meet No. 3.
The College of the Canyons men's and women's swim teams competed at Western State Conference (WSC) Meet No. 3 held April 1 at L.A. Valley College, with both teams finishing in third place.
COC freshman Melvin Martinez was the lone first place finisher on the men's side after posting a time of 2:08.53 in the 200y backstroke. Martinez also competed as part of the men's 400yd freestyle relay team which finished third.
Griffin Scott came away with a pair of second place finishes with a time of 2:22.62 in the 200y breaststroke and a mark of 4:28.01 in the 400y individual medley.
William Karren finished second in the 200y freestyle (2:07.35) and Ryan Swindell finished likewise in the 100y freestyle (50.56). Seth Richards took second place in the 1000y freestyle 11:57.39.
As a team, Canyons tallied 52 event points to trail second place Santa Monica (65) and event winner L.A. Valley (85).
The COC women's team put together a first place finish in the 400y medley relay with a time of 4:44.46 turned in by Jessica Yamauchi, Breanna Hummitzsch, Alexis Kearns and Alysa Velasquez.
Velasquez also finished first in the 100y freestyle (59.18) and second in the 50y freestyle (27.73).
Yamauchi was a second place finisher in the 200y freestyle (2:10.70). Hummitzsch also took second in the 200y breaststroke 2:58.06.
Canyons again finished with 52 event points, placing behind L.A. Valley (64) and event leader L.A. Pierce (96).
The Cougars will next compete at the annual Pasadena Invitational hosted by Pasadena City College April 8-9.
