Canyons Swim Teams Both Finish Third at WSC Meet No. 2

The College of the Canyons swim & dive program competed in the second Western State Conference meet of the season on Friday, with both teams emerging from the water with third place finishes.

COC's men's team finished at 106 event points to fall just short of second place Cuesta College (119) and host L.A. Valley College in first place (127).

COC freshman Jessie Kim was the lone event winner for Canyons, taking first place in the 200-yard backstroke at a time of 2:07.02.

The Cougars also finished runner up in four events.

Melvin Martinez was second in the 1000-yard freestyle at a pace of 11:2.13.

Freshman Tyler Tran placed second in the 100-yard freestyle ay 49.69 and sophomore William Karren clocked a time of 2:08.04 for second in the 200-yard individual medley.

The team of Kim, Tran, Karren and Jonathan Gragas placed second in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:43.61.

Freshman Jennifer Yamauchi won the 1000-yard freestyle event at 11:47.57 to represent the only event winner on the women's side. Yamauchi also took second in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:04.73.

Brooke Coffey's time of 26.69 in the 50-yard freestyle was also good for second place. As was the time of 1:48.07 turned in by the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Antoinette Peterson, Yamauchi, Bailey Van Den Vrijheof and Coffey.

Peterson also placed third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:10.17) and 50-yard freestyle (27.51).

The women's team ranked third with 75 events points, trailing Allan Hancock (104) and Cuesta College (126).

Canyons will now have a week off before competing at WSC Meet No. 3 hosted by Santa Monica College on Friday, March 31. Events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
