Canyons Teams Compete at WSC Meet No. 2

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — College of the Canyons sophomore Jessica Yamauchi scored a first place finish in the 100y backstroke and Miguel Martinez took second in both the 200y butterfly and 200y breaststroke to lead the Cougars at Western State Conference (WSC) Meet No. 2 hosted by Bakersfield College on March 17.
Yamauchi clocked a time of 1:03.54 to win the 100y backstroke event. Earlier in the meet she placed second in the 200y individual medley at a pace of 2:25.06. She also swam alongside teammates Kassidy Gerome , Antoinette Peterson and Melissa Rainbird in the 200y medley relay, placing fifth with a time of 2:09.62.
Peterson recorded a time of 27.64 in the 50y freestyle to place fourth,and later finished fifth in the 100y butterfly at 1:10.50.
As a team, COC's women's squad (111.5) placed eighth in the field of 10 competing schools.
On the men's side, Martinez' second place time of 2:02.67 in the 200y butterfly was followed by a second place run in the 200y breaststroke, clocking in at 2:25.14.
Kendall Payne swam to a third-place time of 11:00.10 in the 1,000y freestyle event and came back to place fourth in 500y freestyle with a time of 5:18.59.
Ian Werner was fourth in the 50y freestyle at 22.77 and sixth in the 100y version of the event at 51.11.
COC's men's team (173) finished seventh in the field of eight schools.
