Lady Cougars Place Second, Men's Team Fifth at WSC Home Meet

The recently renovated Cougar Natatorium was the site of Western State Conference (WSC) Meet No. 1 on Friday, highlighted by the Lady Cougars' swim into second place. COC's men's team finished fifth in the standings.
Canyons freshman Mikaela Martinez and sophomore Kaley Gregory had the best performances of the day with each winning events for the Lady Cougars.
Martinez took first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:01.63, nearly five seconds quicker than the second-place finisher. Earlier in the meet Martinez finished runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly at a pace of 1:04.33.
Gregory won the 50-yard freestyle event at 26.97, just ahead of the second-place time of 27.66. She also posted a second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (1:11.36).
Freshman Sierra Young put together a pair of third-place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle (1:05.09) and breaststroke (1:18.73) events.
COC freshmen Arianna Werner, Katie Johnson and Fernanda Terrones also scored points for Canyons.
Werner was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:15.54) and fifth in the 200-yard Individual Medley (2:47.85). Likewise, Johnson took fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (29.34) and fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:21.81).
Terrones was fourth in the 200-yard IM (2:37.21) and fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:25.38).
Ending the meet was the team of Gregory, Martinez, Young and Werner teaming up for a second-place time of 1:53.98 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Those performances helped Canyons total 96 event points to finish behind meet winner Cuesta College (113). Santa Monica College (89) was third overall ahead of Allan Hancock (66) and L.A. Pierce College (64).
On the men's side, freshman Jacob Gibbs and Joshua Lusk each had third place event finishes to lead the Cougars. Gibbs had a third-place time of 50.92 in the 100-yard freestyle, while Lusk tied for the third spot in the 100-yard backstroke at a pace of 1:05.03. Lusk also took fifth in the 200-yard IM (2:20.43).
Shallen De Zilwawas fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (58.06) and Kellen Bulmer was fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.51).
The relay team of Bulmer, De Zilwa, Lusk and Gibbs combined for a time of 1:37.35 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Cuesta (191.5) won the men's team competition to sweep the meet, followed by Santa Monica (76), Allan Hancock (69), L.A. Pierce (57) and Canyons (52.5).
The Cougars get back in the pool at the annual two-day Mt. San Antonio College Invitational being held Feb. 21-22 in Walnut.
