White and Fowler Set To Represent COC at U.S. Junior National Meet
College of the Canyons freshman Tim White and Anthony Fowler have earned a spot at the U.S. Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships taking place on June 19-23 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - College of the Canyons freshman Tim White and Anthony Fowler have earned a spot at the U.S. Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships taking place on June 19-23 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. The event also coincides with the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
"This is a great opportunity for these two track and field athletes to represent College of the Canyons at the national level. They have worked very hard this season and will compete against the nations best college freshman and warm up side-by-side with the top USA professional track stars," said COC head track and field coach Lindie Kane. "This will definitely be a meet that Tim (White) and Anthony (Fowler) can see where they stand among the nation's best."
White and Fowler both qualified with a combination of their results from this season, and their respective ages. Competitors in the junior nationals must be U.S. citizens, at least 14 years of age on the day of the race but not turn 20 during 2013, while meeting qualifying times set forth by USA Track and Field.
Currently, 16 runners are registered for the triple jump, with many student-athletes from major Division I schools and track club teams. This will be the first meet that White, the state title holder in the triple jump, will have formidable competition, as he has not lost a competition this season, but will face four competitors with better marks than White's this season.
In Fowler's race, there are currently 18 runners, with three more still pending. Fowler, who competed in the state championship in the same event, is ranked ninth in the race, with two additional pending athletes ahead of him.
By competing in the Junior National meet, White and Fowler follow a line of COC track and field athletes including, 800-meter runner Chris Low ran in 2011 and came in sixth in his race, and decathlete Justin Skinner wore COC on his chest at the 2007 U.S. Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships, finishing in 13th place.
White will compete in the triple jump at 9:45 a.m. PST on Thursday, June 20 and Fowler will run in the 400-meter first-round race at 12:15 p.m. PST on Friday, June 21, with the finals scheduled the following day at 11:54 p.m. PST.
The 2013 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships will serve as the selection meet for 2013 Pan American Junior Championships, to be held from August 23-25 in Medellin, Columbia. The top four finishers in each event (the top six finishers in the 100m and 400m) will be asked to complete the Pan Am Junior Championships team processing.
