WALNUT, Calif. – College of the Canyons track and fielder member Jasmine Hall won a Southern California Championship in the heptathlon, while Laurie Henigan came in fifth place on Monday afternoon at the 2014 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Multi-Event Championships at Mt. San Antonio College.
Hall tallied 5,243 points to lead second-place Alexus Dalton of Cerritos College by 42 points. Henigan had 4,299 points and led sixth-place Tricia Cervantes of Riverside City College by 79 points.
Hall found herself sitting in second after the first day of competition with 3,167 points and trailing Dalton who was ahead of the freshman by nine with 3,176 points. The second day's competition started with the long jump, where Dalton (18-3¼) beat out Hall (18- ¼) by three inches to increase her lead to 34 points after the event. Hall used the javelin to move past Dalton and claim the lead as she turned in a distance of 132-6 to win the throwing event. Hall came in fourth in the final race, the 800-meter run, and behind Dalton, but Hall had enough points to hold off Dalton.
Henigan had a solid performance at the two-day meet. She had three top-four finishes in the 100-meter hurdles, the 200-meter dash and the long jump.
Hall and Henigan have earned bids to the CCCAA State Championship Meet on May 16-17 at Mt. SAC.
