Men's Track and Field Team Wins Conference Title, Women Turn In Third-Place Finish
The College of the Canyons men’s track and field team won its first Western State Conference team title since 1970, while the women turned in a third place performance on Friday afternoon at the Western State Conference Finals held at Antelope Valley College.
LANCASTER, Calif. – The College of the Canyons men's track and field team won its first Western State Conference team title since 1970, while the women turned in a third place performance on Friday afternoon at the Western State Conference Finals held at Antelope Valley College.
The men's conference title marks the first for the team since 1970, when the squad was first formed and was a member of the Desert Conference.
The men's team was in second place with 43.5 points after the WSC Prelims a week ago, where a handful of field events acted as finals. The Cougars collected 100 more points and won four events at the WSC Finals and beat out second-place West LA College by six points.
On the women's side, the team found itself in fourth place after tallying 18 points at the COC-hosted prelim meet. COC garnered 74.75 points and moved up one spot to come in third in the conference standings.
Men's track and field member Tim White continued to dominate the jumping events at the WSC Finals. After winning the long jump the week before, White went for the trifecta and came in first place in the triple jump, to win back-to-back titles in the event, and the high jump. White posted a leap of 15.27 meters in the triple jump and cleared 1.97 meters in the high jump.
Freshman Marvin Magg won the college's first individual title in the shot put since 2011 while posting a season-best mark of 13.00 meters. The 4x100-meter relay team of Anthony Fowler, Jeremy Gatewood, Tymon Jones and Matt Ringgold also crossed the finish line first, marking the first title in the relay since 2007.
The women's team had five top-three finishes to help the squad come in third place.
Sophomore Laurie Henigan dominated the 100 and 200-meter dashes coming in third place in both events. The sprinter turned in a season-best 12.01 in the 100 and 26.10 in the 200. Freshman Jasmine Hall came in third place in the 100-meter hurdles with a 16.22 and a season-best 1.61 in the high jump, good for third place. The 4x100 team of Jessica Gill, Jasmine Hall, Qimmah Russo and Laurie Henigan turned in a second-place performance with a time of 48.99.
The Cougars will continue their season at the Southern California Prelims on May 3-4 at Riverside City College.
