Cougars To Send Six Individuals and Two Relay Teams To State Championship Meet
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The College of the Canyons track and field team will send six individuals and two relay teams to compete in 12 events at next weeks California Community College Athletics Association Track and Field Championships at Mt. San Antonio College.
The men's team finished in fifth place with 39 points and the women came in sixth in Southern California with 47 points. Riverside City College won the men's regional championship and Mt. SAC came in first place on the women's side.
Freshman Jasmine Hall continued to anchor the women's team and will compete in six events, which includes the heptathlon. Hall turned in second-place finishes in the 100-meter hurdles (14.31) and set a school record in the 200-meter with her time of 24.59. She also had two fourth-place finishes in the long (7.14m) and the high jump (5.60m).
Freshman Rodrigo Ornelas will make his first appearance at the track and field state championship to compete in the 10,000-meter run after finishing in fifth place with a time of 32:28.28. Also competing for the first time is sophomore Chase Wheeler who came in sixth place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, after crossing the line in 9:38.15. Sophomore Cody Moore turned in a fifth-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 54.40 meters and will also make his state championship debut.
Sophomore Anthony Fowler and Tim White earned their second trip to the state's top competition. Fowler crossed the finish line in 48.24 in the 400-meter dash and will compete in the same event. White notched a third-place finish in the long jump, leaping 7.14 meters.
The Cougar's men's and women's 4x100-meter relay teams will also take part in the state meet. Both foursomes came in fourth place at the Southern California Championships.
Canyons will travel to Mt. SAC for the State Championship on Friday, May 16-17.
