Cougars Open Conference Schedule at WSC Relays

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — College of the Canyons track & field competed in its first conference meet of the season at the two-day Western State Conference (WSC) Relays hosted by Bakersfield College Feb. 15-16. Both COC squads scored top-10 finishes with the men's team taking second place and the women's team settling for ninth overall.

The Cougars' men's relay teams scored a pair of victories for COC. The 4x100m relay team of Steven Arrington, Louis Eusebi, Leo Lambert III, and Calel Christian clocked a time of 43.14 to win the event.

Later, it was the combination of Arrington, Christian, Slade Cavallaro and Lambert winning the 4x400m relay at a time of 3:20.95.

Marcel Sylvester registered a second-place mark of 1.90m in the high jump. Maxwell Hudson threw for a distance of 40.53m to take fifth in the javelin.

Eusebi also had a strong showing in the decathlon, finishing in second place a total of 4,090 points despite not scoring in the pole vault. Eusebi finished first in the 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump and javelin. He only trailed event winner Mahmoud Morsy of Moorpark College at 4,704 points. 

Bakersfield College won the men's meet with a score of 38. COC scored 34 event points followed by third place Moorpark (33), Cuesta (31), and Antelope Valley College (26) in the top five.

COC's women team also scored well in the heptathlon led by Takaira Beard's second place finish at 3,474 points. Beard won the javelin and shot put events, and took second in the 100h, high jump, 200m and long jump. Like Eusebi, she trailed only Paige Johnson of Moorpark College at 3,748.

Canyons swept the first three spots of the 5,000m event led by Celine Whitman's first place time of 20:07.46. Amanda Finn (21:02.19) followed in second place a few steps ahead of Samantha Bell (21:19.80) in third place. Kianna Schlesinger was fifth at 22:56.37.

Victoria Violet finished second in the triple jump at 8.64m. Jamie Araki was third in the event with a mark of 8.30m. 

Ventura College won the meet at 37 points. The Pirates were followed by Antelope Valley (31.5), Moorpark (24), Allan Hancock (23) and Glendale (23) in the top five slots. Canyons placed ninth with 12 event points.

Canyons will next compete at the WSC North meet at Ventura College on Friday, Feb. 23.
