Cougars Finish First in Three Events at Battle of the Regions
Canyons won the men's 4 x 100 relay, 1500m and shot put events, also placed runner-up in the 100m, 400h and 3K steeplechase events.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — College of the Canyons track & field fared well at the season opening Battle of the Regions event hosted by Bakersfield College on Feb. 8.
The Cougars only competed in the men's events, bringing home first place results in the 4 x 100 relay, 1500m and shot put. COC also finished as runner up in the 100m, 400 hurdles, 3K steeplechase and discus.
The combination of Gabriel Halekakis, Delon Buncio, Troy Chairez and Lavell Bailey posted a time of 43.54 in the 4 x 100 relay.
Buncio also took second in the 400 h with a mark of 58.33, while Bailey clocked a time of 11.19 in the 100m to finish second, and 22.97 in the 200m to take third. Chairez was fourth in the 400m at 52.05
The 4 x 400 relay team of Halekakis, Aaron Sooknanan, Bailey and Timothy Sterkel placed third after a run of 3:38.
Sterkel also ran to a first place result in the 1500m at 4:06 and a fourth place time of 2:06 in the 800m to round out his day.
Jacob Acosta placed second in the 3K steeplechase at 10:22.
Jordan Palmer also recorded marks of 13.06m (42' 10.25") in the shot put and 40.73m (133' 7") in the discus to place first and second, respectively.
Canyons is back on the track Friday, Feb. 15, at the Western State Conference (WSC) Relays hosted by West L.A. College.
