LANCASTER — College of the Canyons track & field opened its 2022 campaign at the Western State Conference (WSC) Relays hosted by Antelope Valley College on Friday, with sophomore Milca Osorio wasting no time in stamping her ticket to this year's CCCAA State Championship meet.

Osorio was the top finisher for Canyons after running to a second-place time of 18:54.68 in the 5000m event. Osorio was also a member of COC's cross country team that finished ninth at the state championships last fall.

COC freshman Joshua Christopher was the top finisher on the men's side with a third-place result in the long jump. Christopher, also a contributor for COC on the gridiron, turned in a mark of 5.90m/19'4.25" in his spring season debut.

As a relay event meet points were not tracked and schools not slotted into any final finishing order. Participating programs included: Allan Hancock, Antelope Valley, Bakersfield, Canyons, Cuesta, Glendale, Moorpark, Santa Barbara City, Santa Monica, Ventura and West L.A. College.

Friday's meet was the first competition for COC Track & Field since the Cougars took part in the 'Beach Opener' meet hosted by CSU, Long Beach on March 6-7, 2020. Canyons did not compete in 2021 due to cancellations brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
